A couple in South Carolina announced on Tuesday that they have filed a lawsuit against the state’s child welfare agency and doctors who performed sexual-reassignment surgery on their child when she was a toddler.
The suit was filed by Pam and Mark Crawford, whose child was born with both male and female reproductive organs. According to court documents, the South Carolina Department of Social Services allowed doctors at the Medical University of South Carolina to perform the surgery while the child was in foster care.
The lawsuit alleges that the sexual-assignment surgery, which made the child a girl, was a violation of her 14th Amendment rights. It also claims that the doctors who performed the surgery committed medical malpractice by failing to get informed consent for the procedure from the child’s guardians.
The girl was adopted by the Crawfords after the surgery was performed.
