What to Do If You’re the Victim of Domestic Violence

Personal Injury

Domestic violence is more common today than it has been in past years, due to the overwhelming amount of ways one can exhibit violence toward another. It has progressed beyond being physically harmed by someone, and now includes actions like verbal, emotional, or even economical abuse. If you or someone you know is the victim of domestic violence, there are a few things that should happen to ensure your safety.

Get Help from Others

Anytime domestic violence is occurring, others should know about it. Ideally the first place to go would be the police, although in Nebraska this has very serious consequences. One simple claim of abuse, even if retracted later, will result in an arrest and a no contact order. Nebraska takes abuse very seriously, so be sure that you are ready when speaking to the police.

If you need support but aren’t comfortable involving law enforcement, make sure a friend, neighbor, or family member is aware of the situation and can provide help if and when you are ready to leave. Having a place to stay and people to help keep you safe can be the difference between escaping or staying in a dangerous situation.

Prepare for Changing Situations

If you are being abused by someone you live with, it’s a good idea to be ready to leave at any time. Have a bag packed and ready to go, and make every attempt to have your own source of money to draw from in case you need to leave. If children are present in the abuse situation, make sure the school is aware of who is allowed to pick them up and who is not. Many times an abuser will be angry and come looking for you or your children if you have left, so be sure there is a plan in place to protect everyone.

Stand Firm for Your Own Safety

In a situation involving law enforcement, continue to stand your ground that it is not okay for you to be abused. Abusers will apologize and do anything they can to get back into your life, so if you are truly in danger, make sure you do not allow them to talk you into dropping any charges. Thankfully, Nebraska’s laws are prepared for this kind of activity, and it is very hard to rescind an accusation of abuse. Though you may love the person who was abusing you, you have the right to live a safe life without their violence.

Domestic violence doesn’t have to be a part of your life – if you are being abused and need helping getting out of your situation, contact Inkelaar Law today.
