Male Children Breast Development Caused By Risperdal Side Effects

Several allegations state that Risperdal may produce greater levels of prolactin, a hormone which stimulates breast development in women. Young boys that have taken the drug are demonstrating greater levels of this hormone and may be developing breasts as a result. This is commonly referred to as gynecomastia and may be accompanied by a painful nipple discharge in young boys.

In 2006, the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology stated that risperidone, a generic form of Risperdal, “administered to adolescents at doses commonly used for the treatment of psychotic symptoms can strongly increase prolactin levels, with clinical consequences such as gynecomastia.” This study deducted that long-term effects of Risperdal side effects have not been well-documented in regards to puberty and growth, therefore the medication should be prescribed with caution to children and teenagers.

Risperdal Lawsuit Settlements

Reports indicate that among the Risperdal lawsuits pending against Johnson & Johnson, along with its Janssen unit, nearly 130 of these cases allege that the medication has resulted in male children and teens growing breasts.

In one particular case, the plaintiff alleged that he developed breasts resulting from Risperdal use, which he was administered between the age of nine and 14. The boy claimed he developed psychological trauma resulting from injuries and surgery to reduce breast tissues. On the first day of the 2012 trial, Johnson & Johnson would agree to settle. The amount of the settlement was never released to the public.
